below is my long-awaited butter crock. now that we are making homemade butter from time to time, i have been trying to figure out a way to keep it on the counter without spoiling - which has proved challenging due to the lack of preservatives. a friend of mine uses a crock like the one shown below... and so thanks to amazon.com credit card rewards: ta-da!
oh the exciting life of a young married woman in portland. :)

YES. can't quite figure out the way the ceramic bowl with top keeps the butter from spoiling, so you'll have to explain it to me. i didn't even take any photos today - today was spent on the bus, on my bike, and in the rain. love you. photos tomorrow!
so you put 1/3 cup of cold water in the bottom and put your butter in the bowl-like top. when closed, it supposedly makes an air tight seal. then you just have to switch out the water every couple days. outcome? soft, unspoiled butter!
i used to have a butter crock when first married- got it from Uncle Bob's art coop- the clay artist that made them hated that they were so popular in CA as she had to keep making the same boring shape..hehe
